The majority of these photographs were made at the farm of a close female friend who trains and breeds thoroughbred race horses in Lexington Kentucky. A compassionate animal lover, each horse she’s owned has a home for life. If a horse gets claimed out of a race, it goes with a note saying she will take it back any time no questions asked. She claims them back when she can. She also rescues unwanted, neglected and abused dogs, cats, and horses. In a prior life her pitbull was shot in the head, as a puppy her coonhound was thrown through the window of a moving vehicle outside Shaker Town. Some animals have come from the farms of animal hoarders. Among the most pleasurable are the kittens that she has fixed and find a forever home in the barn. I was originally attracted to the topic of thoroughbred racing because people who work with thoroughbreds are as passionate about horses as artists are about making art.
